Insurance for Your Imported Vehicle

Finding insurance for an imported car can be frustrating. Many insurers simply won't quote, even for straightforward vehicles. We've partnered with specialists who understand imports.

The Challenge

Why Standard Insurers Struggle

Arranging car insurance for a vehicle imported into the UK can be surprisingly complex. Even if your import shares most components with a UK-spec model, many standard insurers will decline to quote.

The problem is data. Insurers price policies based on historical claims, repair costs, and parts availability. For models never officially sold in the UK, they simply don't have this information.

The result? Either outright refusals or absurdly high quotes that treat every import as a high-risk exotic.

The Detail

What Makes Insuring an Imported Car Different?

An import is not automatically riskier than a UK car. It just does not fit the standard insurance mould. These are the five things that actually change when the car you are insuring came from abroad.

Left-hand drive vehicles

Left-hand drive cars are completely legal on UK roads, and you do not need a special class of insurance to drive one. The problem is availability, not legality. Mainstream insurers build their pricing around right-hand drive, UK-market cars, and many simply exclude LHD vehicles rather than adapt their models to a different driving position and non-UK specification. Specialist insurers cover LHD vehicles routinely and rate the car on its own merits.

If your import has been converted to right-hand drive, that conversion counts as a modification. Declare it, along with who carried out the work, or you risk problems at claim time.

Grey imports, JDM cars, and modified vehicles

A grey import (also called a parallel import) is a car brought into the UK outside the manufacturer's official dealer network. Japanese domestic market (JDM) cars are the classic example: models like kei cars, JDM-only sports variants, and grades that were never officially sold here. Because these cars have no UK insurance group rating, a mainstream insurer's quote system often cannot process them at all. That is why you get instant refusals online for a car that is, in reality, perfectly ordinary to insure.

Many grey imports also arrive with modifications, or are higher-performance versions of familiar models. Specialist underwriters assess the actual vehicle: the exact spec, any modifications, how it is stored, annual mileage, and who drives it. Declare every modification, including changes made purely to pass UK compliance testing, such as a speedometer conversion or a rear fog light fitted for the IVA test. Undeclared modifications are a common reason claims get disputed.

Agreed value cover for classics and rare imports

A standard policy pays out the car's market value at the time of loss. For a rare import there may be no meaningful UK market data, so "market value" becomes a negotiation you have after the car is written off, which is the worst possible time. Agreed value cover fixes the payout figure when the policy starts, usually supported by photographs and valuation evidence. For imported classics, low-volume models, and anything appreciating in value, agreed value is one of the strongest reasons to use a specialist insurer.

Insuring on the VIN before UK registration

A freshly imported car has no UK number plate until the DVLA registers it. Insurers who understand imports will set the policy up against the VIN (chassis number) instead, then switch it to the UK registration once your plates are issued. This matters more than people expect: before registration, the only journeys you can legally make on the road are to and from a pre-booked test appointment, such as an MOT or IVA test, and the car must be insured for that drive.

Registration is one step in a longer chain of NOVA declaration, duty and VAT, testing, and DVLA paperwork. Our guide to importing a car to the UK walks through the whole process, and if you are budgeting the import, see how much import duty you will pay.

Parts availability and repair costs

Import status can genuinely affect what a repair costs. Body panels, lights, and trim for a model never sold in the UK may need to be sourced from Japan, the US, or mainland Europe, which can mean longer lead times and shipping costs on top of the parts themselves. Insurers without import experience respond to that uncertainty by declining cover or inflating the premium. Specialists already know which models are easy to fix with shared or aftermarket parts and which need overseas sourcing, so they can price the real risk instead of the worst case.

Insurance is one piece of the import puzzle. For the shipping, customs, testing, and registration costs, you can get an instant import quote from us in minutes.

Why We Recommend Them

Specialists, Not Generalists

Adrian Flux have been insuring unusual vehicles for over 50 years. They understand that an import isn't automatically higher risk, and they price policies accordingly.

  • Specialists in imported and unusual vehicles since 1973
  • Understand parts availability and repair costs for imports
  • Cover for modified vehicles as standard
  • Multi-vehicle and classic car policies available
  • UK-based call centre with knowledgeable staff
  • Agreed value policies for classics

Agreed Value Policies

For classic and specialist vehicles, Adrian Flux offers agreed value policies. This means you and the insurer agree on the car's value upfront. If it's written off, you receive that amount, not a depreciated market value.

Modified Vehicle Cover

Many imports have modifications, whether for IVA compliance or performance. Adrian Flux can cover modified vehicles as standard, where other insurers would decline or charge prohibitive premiums.

Important: ShipMyCar is not an insurance provider and does not offer financial advice. We provide this information as a helpful resource for our customers. We may receive a small referral fee if you take out a policy through Adrian Flux. Please ensure any policy meets your individual requirements before purchasing.

FAQ

Insurance Questions

Why is it hard to insure an imported car?

Standard insurers often struggle with imported vehicles because they lack data on repair costs, parts availability, and claims history for models not sold in the UK. Specialist insurers like Adrian Flux have experience with these vehicles and can price policies accurately.

Can I get insurance before my car arrives in the UK?

Yes. Adrian Flux can arrange cover to begin from the date your vehicle arrives in the UK. This is important as you'll need valid insurance before the car can be driven on UK roads, even for its MOT test.

Will my imported car cost more to insure?

Not necessarily. Specialist insurers understand imported vehicles and don't automatically add huge premiums. Factors like the car's value, your driving history, and intended use matter more than where it was manufactured.

What types of imported cars can Adrian Flux insure?

Almost everything. From classic American muscle cars and Japanese imports to European grey imports and left-hand drive vehicles. They cover modified cars, kit cars, and even project vehicles that aren't yet road legal.

Does ShipMyCar get a commission for insurance referrals?

We may receive a small referral fee if you take out a policy. This doesn't affect your premium. We partner with Adrian Flux because they provide excellent service for imported vehicles, not because of referral income.

Can I insure an imported car in the UK?

Yes. Any imported car that is registered in the UK, or is going through UK registration, can be insured. The catch is that many mainstream insurers decline imports because their systems have no data for models never sold here. Specialist brokers quote on imports every day, including grey imports, left-hand drive cars, and modified vehicles. If you are still planning the import itself, get a full shipping, customs, and registration quote from us first so you know the total cost of getting the car on the road.

Can I insure a car on the VIN before it is registered?

Yes. A newly imported car has no UK registration number until the DVLA issues one, so specialist insurers can set up the policy against the VIN (chassis number) instead. Once your UK registration comes through, the policy is updated to the new number plate. This matters because you need valid insurance to drive the car to a pre-booked MOT or IVA test appointment, which is the only road use allowed before registration.

Is imported car insurance more expensive?

It can be, but it is not automatic. Premiums reflect genuine factors: parts that may need to come from Japan or the US, performance variants that were never sold in the UK, left-hand drive layouts, and a lack of UK claims history for the model. A specialist insurer prices that actual risk instead of refusing to quote. For classics and low-use imports, agreed value and limited mileage policies often keep the cost sensible.

Do I need special insurance for a left-hand drive car?

There is no separate legal class of insurance for left-hand drive vehicles. LHD cars are perfectly legal to drive in the UK. The practical issue is finding an insurer willing to cover one, since many mainstream insurers exclude LHD from their pricing models. Specialist insurers cover LHD vehicles routinely. Always declare the car as left-hand drive, and declare any RHD conversion work as a modification.

Can I get agreed value insurance for an imported classic?

Yes. Agreed value cover is one of the main reasons import owners use specialist insurers. You and the insurer agree the car's value when the policy starts, usually supported by photos and valuation evidence, and that figure is what you receive in a total loss. For a rare import with no UK market comparables, this avoids arguments over market value at claim time.
